Bonsai Mix
For the best possible growing conditions for your Bonsai, use Debco's specifically-formulated Bonsai Mix.
Professionally formulated to meet the
physical and nutritional needs of your Bonsai, Debco Bonsai Mix is based on special blends used by wholesale nurserymen.
It contains zeolite to hold and release nutrients in the soil to
ensure the best possible growing conditions. It also absorbs and traps
ammonium, reducing the chances of ammonium toxicity in your plants.
Debco Bonsai Mix contains crushed quartz to ensure good drainage, and the nutritional aspect has been developed to suit conifers and other deciduous trees used in the art of Bonsai.
When to use Debco Bonsai Mix
Re-pot Bonsai trees periodically, to minimise
the gradual but constant compression of potting mix in the pot
and provide fresh growing media and better conditions for your tree,
and to
allow pruning of the roots.
The best time for potting a new Bonsai, or repotting
an existing one, is in late winter or early spring, prior to any
new growth appearing.
How to use Debco Bonsai Mix
 |
Carefully remove your Bonsai
from its container, and remove old soil from the roots. |
 |
If the roots have grown into
a solid mass, carefully tease them out and prune them, using
heavy pruning shears. If necessary, trim up to 30% from the
roots, making sure the remaining roots will fit into the shape
of your new container or pot. Pruning the roots will help stimulate
new growth and allow room for the fresh potting mix. |
 |
Part-fill your container with Debco Bonsai
Mix (if you would like your plant to grow bigger, select
a larger container). |
 |
Cover drainage holes with plastic insect screening
cut into squares slightly larger than the openings. |
 |
Now place the tree in the desired
position, filling all empty spaces between the old root-ball
and the walls of the pot. Add more potting mix as you go.
The potting mix level should be slightly below the rim of
the pot, to trap water. |
Hints
It's best to fertilise Bonsai trees in spring
and autumn . Bonsai growing in Debco Bonsai Mix will require
a complete liquid fertiliser (such as Phostrogen) or slow-release fertiliser (such as seaorganic). If your
container is small, apply only half recommended measures for pot
plants. Do not fertilise if potting mix is dry, or for a few
weeks after repotting.
Use Debco Bonsai Mix straight from the bag,
and close the bag tightly after use. Store in a cool, dry location. |
