Mulches and Composts
Save water, control weeds, improve the soil and
help your garden. Good quality mulches and composts do all this
and more.
"Mulch helps to stop weeds and save water,
and improves the look of your garden too. In simple terms, mulch
is a layer of material spread on the soil around plants and may
include pebbles or gravel, wood chips, straws or barks. Mulch reduces
the need for watering by minimising evaporation from the soil surface.
It is best applied in spring, when soils are still wet and beginning
to warm. Don't forget to put a layer of mulch around your pot plants
too!
The organic matter in composts can
bring new life to poor soils. In most circumstances it's important
to prepare your garden soil before planting. This is best done by
digging some compost through it to improve soil structure and enrich
the garden."
