June in your Sub-Tropical garden
Plant bare root trees as soon as they come into the nursery. Make your selection early to obtain the best plant - one that has not dried out too much.
Spring-flowering bedding plants including primulas and cineraria can be planted now. The latter is especially suitable in lightly shaded areas.
Divide dormant perennials including sedum and penstemons now. Remember to retain the edge plants with the best vigour for your own garden.
Plant kiwifruit in your garden now. Select male and female plants to secure good pollination. One male is sufficient for nine females. Female plants grafted with a male plant are available but the male is generally so vigorous that it takes over unless strictly pruned.
Lime your beds three weeks prior to sowing broad beans, and fertilise with a good, composted organic fertiliser a week before sowing. Seed should be sown 5cm deep, 20cm apart in rows 80cm apart, applying a mixed fertiliser of three parts superphosphate to one part sulphate of ammonia on the soil surface.
Potatoes can be planted towards the end of the month in furrows 15cm deep, 75cm apart. Cut your seed potato to leave two eyes to each potato piece. Placed in a tray in a shady place these will begin to sprout but make sure you don't damage them as you plant them out. |
