April in your Sub-Tropical garden
Divide perennials like phlox, michaelmas daisies and asters, using the edge plants with good vigour as your new plants. Apply Debco Debcote fertiliser around the planting area to fertilise your new growth.
Re-pot large display citrus in your garden. It's a good idea at this time to root prune, pulling away some of the loose roots, but do be sure to keep roots moist while they are out of the container. You can pot your plants on into a larger container or re-pot using new mix. Shake off the old mix and re-vitalise it with Debco PotMate before using it in other pots. Re-pot your citrus in Debco Terracotta & Tub, watering the plants in well. You could plant pansies or violas around the citrus and annual plants for really effective spring display. Use Debco Bulb Potting Mixture for optimum effects. By planting flowering annuals over your bulbs your containers never have a downtime, so you needn't hide your tubs away while the bulbs grow.
Watch your local nursery and display gardens for autumn colour, noting those plants that offer the best display. Acer 'Osakazuki' is almost unbeatable for display, though Euonymus alatus is also superb and is rarely planted. Plant an autumn colouring tree or shrub now.
Silverbeet is a most rewarding winter vegetable. Plant seedlings now in well-fertilised soil and maintain vigorous growth by applying a soluble fertiliser such as Phostrogen Plant Food every two weeks. For more colour in your vegetable garden plant Swiss Chard - its brightly coloured stems are highly decorative.
Lettuce is welcome even in winter. Cos offers an excellent crisp leaf and may be picked a leaf at a time. Apply Phostrogen Plant Food to sustain vigorous growth. |
